The Bp Oil Spill

I created The Bp Oil Spill website to house the collective work that was created by my fellow classmates and myself. The work was created to visualize the effects of the Bp oil spill in different ways. I was challenged with the task of displaying all of the data in a interesting mannor.

The main gimmick of the site is the notion that it exists as the doppleganger to the official  British Petroleum website. This is conveyed by closely resembling the graphical styles of the orignal, mainly type and color. The site features an “invert colors” button which allows the user to alter the color scheme of the site, and possibly revealing to the user its resemblance to the bp style. All of the colors on the site can be inverted with the click of a button at the top of the page. This allows the user to see and experience the site with a different perspective.

At the time I was very much inspired by The Yes Men who originally started out creating “spoof” or “fake” websites that resembled a real website. I took this idea a step further by mimicking traces of the British Petroleum website and incorporating it into my design, however I inverted all of the colors on the page, and enable the user to switch back and forth.
