Trip to the moon
I was challenged to design a the topside of a physical DVD. The DVD was for Georges Méliès’ ”Trip to the moon“, a French Film released in 1902. The disc was to accompany a book edited by Matthew Solomon titled ”Fantastic Voyages of the Cinematic Imagination: Georges Melies’s Trip to the Moon“.
The font I chose for this piece was ITC Tiffany. I believe that this font went well with the aesthetic and era I wanted to encapsulate in the design. The thing I like most about this font is that the italic and regular versions look very different, the italic being very curvaceous and the regular looking rather pointy. Another distinct characteristic of this type face is the regular-forms distinct angular points, which jettison from harsh angles within each letter.
The background of the disc is a screenshot from the film. The background edited to fit onto the disc, and the moon was moved so that it was perched about the title. I was also constrained by the printing process and was only allowed a black and white color scheme, never-the-less the monochromatic theme reflects the film quite well.
